For all sorts of reason we think Green Eggs are the best eggs we’ve ever eaten. But when Alan and Shelly Green, who are both from farming families, bought some land near Arrarat they didn’t intend to turn it into one of Australia’s most eco-friendly and chicken-friendly egg farms. In fact, they didn’t know what they’d turn it in to.
Eventually the husband and wife team decided producing (genuinely) free range eggs would suit the property and the market place.
In the year 2000 they bought 2000 “girls”. Today they have 30,000 across 480 hectares and have won awards ranging from Landcare to Vogue.
The fact that the Greens try to find new homes – “a life of leisure in a quite shady patch” – for their retired chickens demonstrates just how much they care about their animals and the environment they live in.
