With a love of good quality food and a desire to be a part of the shift away from animal cruelty and exploitation, Damona Divine Cow was created by Martin Soerensen after finding there were few good alternatives to dairy cheeses that tick all the boxes.

Hand made and packed with organic and locally produced ingredients where possible, Damona Divine Cow have a selection of flavours and styles; perfect for your cheeseboard, or used in cooking. Made with love and care, Damona Divine Cow are continually striving to be the best at what they do and create the best range of dairy free cheeses.

We caught up with Martin from Damona to find out more.

Who are the team behind Damona Divine Cow and what made you launch?

It was started by me, Martin Soerensen with support and inspiration from my partner Rosa. It was a combination of wanting to see better dairy free cheese alternatives on the shop shelves and to start growing something of my own. Now there are three other staff members who look after the production.

What does a day in the life of the Damona Divine Cow team look?

There are different jobs to be done; driving around picking up ingredients and packaging equipment, making deliveries, making the different products, packing and labelling, chatting and coming up with ideas for new products.

What was involved in developing the range of Damona Divine Dairy Free Cheeses?

It was a gradual process of learning and experimenting. It’s a very different thing making a little bit at home to making it work on a larger scale and making it consistent and there has been a lot of trial and error along the way.

Dairy free, how do you achieve a similar flavour and texture as dairy cheese?

I don’t believe in artificial flavouring, so all the products have a mix of natural food flavors, such as vinegar and miso. Textures are a challenge, but there are different starches and seaweed extracts that help produce the similar textures to cheese.

Can you tell us more about the nutritional benefits of Damona Divine dairy free cheese?

Our soymilk based cheeses are made with organic coconut oil and organic soymilk, so you get a good amount of healthy saturated fats and protein. The nut based products have a high content of healthy fats and protein as well. That said, dairy free cheese as with dairy cheese isn’t meant to be consumed in huge amounts, it should be an indulgence.

If not following a vegan diet, would you still recommend Damona Divine to dairy cheese lovers?

Absolutely! Especially the Baked Almond Feta and the range of nut based pates with native Australian flavours that is coming out shortly should please anyone who loves good food. And as many people have intolerance to dairy or want to cut down for health reasons, I think all of our products should satisfy

What sets your dairy free cheese apart from other alternatives available?

What sets our products apart is the care with which they have been made; from making our own soymilk to using Australian and organic ingredients whenever possible. Also the versatility, the range works as well on cheese boards as on toasties. And not least, our love and passion for food and flavours, which ensures the products are made with the intention to satisfy the senses.

What has been your greatest achievement to date?

There hasn’t been just one single achievement, I am just amazed of how far this business has come since I started making these cheeses at home. Working with distributors, becoming an employer, seeing all the amazing feedback and love from across Australia.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only take three things what would they be?

My guitar, a bag of mangoes and some Damona Mountain Pepper Pâté
