The Aziva team took some time out of their busy schedule to tell us more. 

Who are the team behind Aziva and what made you launch?

We are a family owned business that like many businesses commenced at home in the kitchen.I had suffered IBS throughout my life and when life became stressful all those symptoms would reappear. In 2015, I searched for a solution that could be integrated into our everyday lifestyle and be sustainable. At the time, the buzz word was fermented products and in particular Kombucha. Kefir at the time was not as well known yet its health benefits far exceeded those of Kombucha plus our family are dairy lovers. 

In 2015/2016 Kefir products being sold within Australia had a traditional sour/yeasty taste profile and as expected our three children could not stomach the products. It was like introducing Vegemite to an adult, unless you were brought up on it from birth, its unsavoury. This is where the opportunity arose. I went about learning how to make Kefir from scratch. Having a technical background (scientific) I researched and researched how to make kefir. With our product development team, our three children (Mia, Alexa and David) I created a taste profile that the entire family could enjoy without compromising on the health benefits and unlike other kefir products I decided to make it a Lactose Free.  As a family we searched for name that would aline well with the core values of our product and “Aziva”. Siva / Ziva is a slavic goddess of life and fertility. Ziva (also Zhiva) also is also Hebrew name. Ziva is a first name for women and an equally uncommon last name. The meaning of the name Ziva, which is a variant of Ziv, is “radiance, brilliance, light, God, brightness”. Aziva was born. 


What does a day in the life of the Aziva team look like?

A day in the life of the team, is dynamic. We start each day with picking up the milk to make our kefir and aligning our production run with what we need to make for the day. Then we move onto talking with our customers and understanding where we can improve our service and products. This provides us with a close and clear understanding of where to take our products. Lastly, we are spending a lot of time developing new product lines that are both innovative and unique; hence the creation of Aziva Pot Set Kefir. This was created from in store interactions with customers who asked us to make it into a product that was thicker and required a spoon, so we did.  

For those who don’t know, can you tell us a little bit more about Kefir and the benefits of it?

Kefir dates back 2000 and originated in the Caucasus mountains in the former Soviet Union where it was fermented naturally in bags made of animal hides. Kefir grains were a symbiotic colony of bacterias that worked together to provide them with health and longevity.The naturally occurring bacterias in kefir combine symbiotically to give superior health benefits when consumed regularly. It is loaded with valuable vitamins and minerals, it contains easily digestible complete proteins, and it boasts natural antibiotic properties - a natural antibiotic made with milk. For the lactose intolerant, kefir’s abundance of beneficial bacterias provide lactase, an enzyme which consumes most of the lactose left after the culturing process. 

Kefir is rich in Vitamin B12, B1, and Vitamin K. It is an excellent source of biotin, a B Vitamin which aids the body's assimilation of other B Vitamins, such as folic acid, pantothenic acid, and B12. The numerous benefits of maintaining adequate B vitamin intake range from regulation of the kidneys, liver and nervous system to helping relieve skin disorders, boost energy and promote longevity.  

What is involved in making Aziva Kefir?

Aziva sources its milk directly from farms just on the outskirts of the Adelaide Hills in South Australia, ensuring the milk is fresh and completely traceable. Working with our famers ensures the high quality milk goes from paddock to finished product in less than 36hours. Aziva Kefir has been specifically created with a blend of 15 kefir probiotics and cultures to provide a positive effect on the health and wellbeing of its customers. We ferment our products for up to 20 hours at low temperatures in a large VAT to allow the cultures to multiply and break down milk to create a fermented product. We measure and taste the products quality and then proceed to cool off the product over the last hour. When cooled we fill our bottles and containers ready for distribution.


What sets Kefir apart from other products currently available?

Aziva kefir not only tastes good, we know it contributes to our customers wellbeing when consumed regularly. 6% of Australia is lactose intolerant and as we become older tolerance to lactose decreases as we naturally loose the enzyme within our bodies to break down lactose. Aziva was the first Kefir product to be released as a lactose free product, making easier to digest than any other product on the market. Aziva ingredients are ethically sourced and traceable to their origins. This ensures we understand that only the best is added to our products. Aziva was also the first to transform the product from a pouring kefir to a pot set yogurt style product for those who enjoy the spooning experience. We continue to be a family owned business with the product development team having a big say on what gets launched.

What has been your greatest achievement to date?

Created a great product with a solid foundation to share with everyone who enjoys a dairy based product.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only take three things, what would they be?

This may be a bit bias but Kefir would be number one because I could make more kefir from any other source of milk on the island (cow, goat, buffalo,…) and still maintain my health from the probiotic benefits it would create for me to consume, followed by water and items to start a fire so we could stay warm.
