What’s the Hype? Doughnut Peaches

Ardmona, Victoria, Doughnut peaches were first grown in China. As the name suggests, they have a flat shape and bare some similarity to a doughnut.

As well as being delicious, they taste sweeter and richer they also have a more tender, almost velvety texture and fit pleasingly, into the palm of your hand. All you have to do is bite in.

The doughnut peach can be used like any other peach; served alone added to fruit salads, made into pies, tarts, cakes and more. Sliced doughnut peaches can also be paired beautifully with other stone fruit, with aged cheeses and young cheeses, especially ricotta, and with nuts like almonds and pistachios. Oh. And cream of course.

And if you want to get a little creative, why not try this scrumptious recipe from our friends at Deliciously Legal for Vanilla Doughnut peaches with Macadamia Nougat cream.

When it comes to picking the perfect doughnut peach, heres a few things to keep in mind.

  • Look for doughnut peaches that have a yellow skin, blushed with red; there should be no tinge of green.
  • Check that it is sweetly fragrant
  • A ripe doughnut peach will keep for two days in a fruit bowl, longer if refrigerated
  • If you do keep your doughnut peaches in the fridge, bring them back up to room temperature before eating as the cold pushes down their flavour
  • Once a doughnut peach has reached its peak it will over-soften quickly so buy little and often
