Who are the team behind The Broth Sisters and what made you launch?
Linda is the main entrepreneur and producer behind the broth sisters and her older sister Jane predominantly attends to the administrative and marketing side of the business. We decided to launch our product after finding few premium quality and delicious tasting broths on the market and to share our papa’s recipe and our artisan made broth with our local communities.
What did you do before launching The Broth Sisters?
Before launching the ‘broth sisters’ Linda was an international flight attendant living in Dubai, she also practiced as a health and nutrition coach both here and overseas. Jane had a career as a business analyst and marketing executive in the finance industry. We are both mothers devoted to nurturing and raising our beautiful children.
What does a day in the life of The Broth Sisters team look like?
A day in the life of the ‘broth sisters’ is diverse. It may involve cooking and processing orders, sourcing produce, talking to suppliers and retailers, conducting in store tastings or running market stalls, attending to administration and interacting on social media. In between we both run busy households and attend to the needs of our family. Interacting with others is one of the most enjoyable parts of our day.
For those who don’t know, can you tell us what bone broth is and what the health benefits are?
Bone broth is a mineral rich infusion made by slow cooking the bones of healthy animals. It is deeply nourishing and has many healing properties that are missing from modern diets. It is rich in collagen, protein and important non-essential amino acids, especially proline and glycine and has many health benefits. These include, improving digestion and healing and sealing the lining of the digestive tract, reducing stiffness in joints and reducing inflammation in the body, boosting immunity to help fight infection, improving bowel health, reducing cellulite, wrinkles and promoting glowing skin and hair, increasing the natural production of collagen to slow loss of bone mass and inflammatory and autoimmune diseases such as arthritis and osteoporosis, and improving brain health by supporting good gut health.
What has been The Broth Sister greatest achievement to date?
Apart from producing three healthy and happy children between us (soon to be four) our biggest achievement was seeing our artisan bone broth on the shelves of local health food stores and select grocers such as The Leaf Store.
How should The Broth Sisters bone broth be enjoyed?
Bone broth can be enjoyed in many ways, however first and foremost enjoyed straight up as a health tonic as it tastes delicious. For variety, one might also like to drink it with, a squeeze of lemon juice and black pepper, some Sicilian chilli oil, by adding pastured butter, ghee or coconut oil, with sliced fresh ginger or turmeric and star anise and fresh coriander, with probiotic rich beef kvass, or with a squeeze of lemon juice, lemon zest, freshly grated ginger and garlic and a spoon of raw honey to alleviate Spring allergies. Alternatively our bone broth may be used in soups and stews, risottos, bolognese sauce, gravies or to cook grains such as quinoa and rice. It may also be used when mashing or pureeing vegetables.
What sets The Broth Sisters broth apart from other bone broths on the market?
The gelatin content of our broth and the delicious flavour are two of the distinguishing features that set the broth sisters bone broth apart from the majority of other broths on the market. In addition, the longer cooking times at low temperatures ensures a higher nutrient content. We do not pasteurise our broth at high temperatures or add preservatives to extend the shelf life, but maintain the integrity of the broth by fresh-freezing it. This is the least invasive way of retaining the nutrients and efficacy of the bone broth at the same time as ensuring that plastic compounds and heavy metals do not leach into the broth.
When you’re not busy with The Broth Sisters, what do you like to do in your spare time?
When we are not busy, we enjoy catching up with family and friends, enjoying good food, travelling and exploring new cultures, educating ourselves and keeping updated with information relating to health and wellbeing, or simply chilling out outdoors, at the beach or curled up on the couch with a great book to read.
If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only take three things, what would they be?
If we were stranded on a deserted island and could only take three things, Jane says she would take her husband for his common sense and dry sense of humour, her two children who are at the centre of her life, and an endless supply of squishy figs because she adores them. Linda would take her adoring two year old son, a “Coco Jack” to ensure she had no trouble opening the fresh coconuts growing on the island for food and hydration, plus a super sized tube of sunscreen.
